ABOUT

My pots are created by hand building with slabs of stoneware clay. I choose to roll each slab by hand and use ribs to compress the clay for greater strength. This creates a very tight and smooth surface.

The pieces are carefully constructed and formed into soft shapes. Surfaces are deliberately marked to enhance the pot’s construction and shape. In particular, the areas where two slabs join are emphasized by marks that I call “seams.”

My glazes create a soft surface so that the piece feels satisfying in the hand. I apply them in thin coats so that the glaze emphasizes rather than obscures the markings. Most often the glazes fire to a matte or semi-matte finish and absorb light rather then reflect it off the surface.

I intend for my pots to be used in the everyday traditions of life. They add beauty and a sense of occasion and ceremony in their use.
